The following overview gives the basic steps for setting up and customizing a Series3 or TiVo HD DVR to work with your TV and other equipment.

Before the installer arrives, connect the DVR to the signal source (cable or antenna), the TV, and to the TiVo Service. See the "Start Here" poster for directions.

NotesIf you do not yet have digital cable or CableCARDs, that's okay. Proceed with the next step.

Perform Guided Setup.

  • If you have an antenna or basic cable, you can run Guided Setup and enjoy your DVR right away.

  • If you intend to install CableCARDs, it's a good idea to run Guided Setup a few days before the installer arrives to ensure that the DVR receives any recent software updates and that you can successfully connect to the TiVo Service. If you do not yet have even basic cable, that's okay. Simply run Guided Setup as though you do, and answer "Yes" when asked if you see video.
  •
    • If you just received your CableCARD(s) and have not yet run Guided Setup, you can install them during initial Guided Setup.

Call your cable provider to order your CableCARD(s). Make sure to ask them about any special HD packages.

- Series3 HD DVR - You will need two (2) S-CARDs or two (2) M-CARDs to enable dual tuning of digital cable programs.
-  TiVo HD DVR - You will need one (1) M-CARD or two (2) S-CARDs to enable dual tuning of digital cable programs.

NotesSome cable providers allow you to pick up and install the cards yourself and then call them back to activate. Others require an installer to come out to your home to install and activate the card. Your DVR comes packaged with an instructions sheet you can give to a cable installer to make the process go more smoothly.

Select a compatible video output format and aspect ratio for your TV.

See Setting the Video Output Format on a Series3 or TiVo HD DVR, Setting the TV Aspect Ratio on a Series3 or TiVo HD DVR, and Does the TiVo Digital Video Recorder Support Surround Sound? for instructions.
