Getting started with Multi-Room Viewing

Multi-Room Viewing allows you to transfer programs from one TiVo DVR to another. Multi-Room Viewing is available on Series2, Series3 and TiVo HD DVRs.

Requirements

~ Series2, Series2 DT, Series3HD, TiVo HD, or TiVo HD XL DVR

~ All DVRs must also be running software version 9.1 or later. To learn more, go to TiVo software version information.

~ All DVRs must be on the same TiVo billing account

~ All DVRs must be connected to the same subnet on your network. (Most home networks have only one subnet.)

~ Transfers must be enabled in Manage My Account (MMA). Log in to Manage My Account, and click DVR Preferences on the left navigation bar. Make sure there is a checkmark in the Allow Transfers column next to each DVR from which you would like to transfer programs.

Allowable Transfers

Series2 DVR can transfer Standard Definition (SD) recordings to and from any other TiVo DVR with Multi-Room Viewing.
They cannot transfer High Definition (HD) recordings.

TiVo HD or Series3 HD DVR can transfer Standard Definition recordings to and from any other TiVo DVR with Multi-Room Viewing.
They can transfer High Definition recordings to and from other Series3 or TiVo HD DVR.

Non-transferrable content

The prohibition icon (red circle with slash) appears next to recordings that cannot be transferred. Examples of non-transferable content include:
• Digital download content from Amazon or TiVoCast
• High definition recording from a TiVo HD or Series3 to a Series2
• Copy-protected material

NotesWhile your provider controls what programs are copy-protected, recordings from local channels should never be copy-protected. Please contact your cable provider if you are unable to transfer a recording from a local channel due to copy protection. Tell them they have the copy-protection set to CCI:0x02.

Transferring a program from one TiVo DVR to another

Note:This procedure refers to the source DVR and destination DVR. The source DVR is the DVR that contains the program to transfer. The destination DVR is the DVR to which the program is being transferred. Both the source and destination DVRs will continue to function normally while the transfer is taking place. The destination DVR is always used to request a transfer from the source DVR.

To transfer a show using Multi-Room Viewing:

Step one:Make sure the source and destination DVRs are connected correctly. For information on connecting DVRs, go to How to connect a TiVo DVR to your network.

NotesYou can also connect two DVRs for Multi-Room Viewing without a network, either wirelessly or by using a crossover cable. For instructions, see Creating a wireless peer-to-peer network to connect two DVRs, or Connecting two DVRs without a home network via wired Ethernet cable

Step two:Make sure that you have enabled transfers in Manage My Account, as described above.

Step three:From the destination DVR, press the TiVo button on the remote control to go to TiVo Central and select Now Playing.

Note: Programs are transferred one at a time in the order requested. The speed of the transfer depends on a variety of factors. For example, a program recorded at a higher quality takes longer than one recorded at a lower quality, and wireless networks are generally slower than wired networks.

Step seven:From the Getting Program screen, select Start playing to begin viewing the program as it transfers.

Note:You can only watch the portion of the recording that has been transferred to the second DVR. Because transfer speeds can vary, you may experience pauses during playback if the transfer is not complete.
