The following overview gives the basic steps for setting up and customizing TiVo HD, TiVo HD XL, and Series3 HD DVRs to work with your TV and other equipment You can use cable or antenna or a combination of the two as your signals source. Cable service with CableCARDs is recommended to get the full enjoyment out of your DVR.

To set up your HD TiVo DVR:

  1. If you want to use your DVR with digital cable, contact your cable provider to arrange for cable service and CableCARD(s). Ask if you will also need a Tuning Adapter for Switched Digital Video.
    • TiVo HD and TiVo HD XL DVRs require 1 M-Card (multi-stream CableCARD) or 2 S-Cards (single-stream CableCARDs) . Series3 HD DVRs require 2 M-Cards or 2 S-Cards.
    • A Tuning Adapter is required only when your cable provider offers channels using Switched Digital Video. For more information, go to www.tivo.com/switched.
    • Make sure you also ask them about any special HD packages.

NOTE: Some cable providers allow you to pick up and install the cards yourself and then call them back to activate. Others require an installer to come out to your home to install and activate the card. Your DVR comes packaged with an instructions sheet you can give to a cable installer to make the process go more smoothly.

  1. At least a day before the cable installer arrives (two or three is better, if possible), connect the DVR to the signal source (cable or antenna), the TV, and to the TiVo Service and  perform Guided Setup. This ensures that the DVR can make a successful phone or network connection to the TiVo service, and that it has time to download and install any recent software updates.
    • See the "Start Here" poster included in the DVR box for hookup instructions
    • If you do not yet have even basic cable, that's okay. Simply run Guided Setup as though you do, and answer "Yes" when asked if you see video.

  1. Select a compatible video output format and aspect ratio for your TV.

See Setting the Video Output Format on a Series3 or TiVo HD DVR, Setting the TV Aspect Ratio on a Series3 or TiVo HD DVR, and Does the TiVo Digital Video Recorder Support Surround Sound? for instructions.

  1. Program the TiVo remote to control power and audio on your TV (and, optionally, an A/V receiver).

See How Do I Program My Remote to Control a TV/Stereo? for instructions.

  1. Enjoy your new TiVo HD DVR! To learn more about the DVR's features, refer to the Viewer’s Guide included in the carton. Or to read the Viewer's Guide online, see the User Guides page.
