How Do I Set Up My Series3 HD DVR with a High Definition TV, an A/V Receiver, and Other Devices?

ParagraphThis setup is an example of how to connect a Series3 HD DVR to a high definition TV (HDTV), an A/V receiver, a VCR or DVD recorder, and a DVD player or game console. You can then select an input source on the A/V receiver to choose which device’s output will be displayed on the TV. For more details about using this configuration, refer to the instructions that were included with your A/V receiver and other equipment.

Before you begin installation:

  • If your DVR did not come pre-activated, we recommend that you activate your TiVo Service. DVRs purchased at the TiVo store always come pre-activated. If the DVR was purchased at a retail store, you can activate it online at www.tivo.com/activate.

  • If there is another TiVo DVR in the room where you’re installing the Series3 HD DVR, make sure you cover the front of the older DVR, or unplug it, to avoid sending commands to it from the new TiVo remote. After you complete Guided Setup, you can program the Series3 HD remote to control both DVRs (see Controlling Two TiVo DVRs with One Remote) or set up each remote to control only its own DVR (see Controlling Two TiVo DVRs with Separate Remotes).

  • If you're going to install CableCARDs, call your cable provider to order the cards. If your TV is already connected to a cable box, you may want to connect the cable box to another input on your TV while you're waiting for CableCARDs installation, so you don’t miss any of your favorite shows. After CableCARDs are installed, you can either disconnect the cable box and return it to your cable provider, or use it to receive interactive cable services (see How Can I Watch and/or Record a Pay Per View Event? for more information).

This example uses cable (with or without CableCARDs) and antenna as the TV program sources. (CableCARDs are installed during or after Guided Setup.) To find step-by-step instructions for connecting the DVR to your high definition TV, see How Do I Set Up My Series3 HD DVR with a High Definition TV, and a VCR or DVD Recorder?
