FAQs about TiVo Roamio DVRs

Will my TiVo box work with my cable service?

TiVo boxes work with all major cable providers and Verizon FiOS. For select Comcast subscribers, XFINITY On Demand programming is also accessible. Check to see if your cable provideroffers TiVo DVRs with their service packages.

What type of signal sources do TiVo Roamio DVRs work with to get programming?

CABLE:

  • HD Digital Cable: TiVo Roamio, Roamio Plus and Pro are compatible with digital cable systems. It is important you verify that you have a digital cable signal before purchasing this product. These products do not work with external cable boxes, analog cable or satellite. A CableCARD™ decoder is required to receive any digital cable programming. Additional fees may apply from your cable provider

  • Analog cable: none

  • Verizon FiOS®: All TiVo Roamio DVRs

  • AT&T U-verse®: no TiVo product compatibility

  • Check to see if your cable provider offers TiVo DVRs with their service packages.

HD ANTENNA: TiVo Roamio

SATELLITE: visit directv.com/tivo

Can I use with an antenna?
  • TiVo Roamio has 4 ATSC tuners that allows the DVR to record up to four channels at once from digital over-the-air broadcasts in full HD
  • TiVo Roamio Plus/Pro do not support ATSC over-the-air signals
  • ATSC broadcasts are completely free and are accessible by using an HD antenna, which is available for purchase at retail stores or from tivo.com
What is a CableCARD decoder?
  • About the size of a credit card, a CableCARD is a plug-in card that is inserted into a slot in your TiVo box so you can receive digital cable channels. CableCARDs are supplied by your cable company and enable your TiVo box to unscramble your cable company's encrypted signal. Once inserted and activated, a CableCARD communicates with your local cable system and delivers all the high-definition and digital cable channels included in your cable TV subscription package.
  • If you do not insert a CableCARD decoder into your TiVo box:
TiVo Roamio (4-tuner):  will still receive antenna channels. It will also receive broadband content, as long your TiVo box is connected to the Internet through your home network.

TiVo Roamio Plus or Pro:  will receive broadband content, as long your TiVo box is connected to the Internet through your home network.

Do I need a CableCARD?

To access all of your high-definition and digital cable channels, a multi-stream CableCARD decoder(s) must be inserted into the CableCARD slot on your [MC1] TiVo DVR.

[MC1]For Roamio, the cablecard connector can be accessed under the unit

How do I get one?
  • You must call your cable company to schedule the installation of a CableCARD decoder. Some cable providers allow their customers to pick up their CableCARD at the cable company's local service center and install it on their own. While some cable companies offer CableCARDs to their subscribers for free, others may charge a nominal monthly fee. Contact your cable provider for details.

Federal law mandates that all major cable companies provide CableCARDs to their digital cable subscribers, so if you experience any problems call our Technical Support team at 1-877-367-8486 and we will initiate a three-way call with your cable company to expedite setup.

How much will CableCARD decoders cost me?

Cost will depend on the cable operator. Some cable operators offer them free of charge, while others may charge a nominal amount per-month fee to rent.

What cable companies are required to support CableCARD decoders? Why?

All major cable companies are federally mandated to support CableCARD decoders. Many cable companies also offer a "self-install" option — you can visit their retail location, pick up a cable card, and install it yourself.

How do I install CableCARD decoders in my TiVo box?

You will need to call your cable company and request one Multi-stream CableCARD decoder (M-Card). Many cable companies require that a technician come to your home to install the card, but some allow subscribers to install the cards themselves. Call your cable company and inquire about their CableCARD installation policy.

To help your cable technician with installing your CableCARD decoder, please download and print the following instructions:

Tips for installing a CableCARD into your TiVo DVR

Federal law mandates that all major cable companies provide CableCARDs to their digital cable subscribers, so if you experience any problems call our Technical Support team at 1-877-367-8486 and we will perform a three-way call with your cable company to expedite delivery.

Can I use my old CableCARD in my new TiVo DVR?

You may use a CableCARD from an earlier generation TiVo box, but it must be a Multi-stream CableCARD (M-Card). Single-stream cards are not supported by TiVo Roamio boxes. Simply move the Multi-stream CableCARD from your old TiVo box to your new TiVo box and follow the instructions on the installation menus that automatically appear on your TV screen.

Can I set up my TiVo DVR if I don't have my CableCARD yet?

When going through Guided Setup you can choose to install a CableCARD at that time or to install at a later date. If you don't have your CableCARD yet, choose 'install at a later date' and finish Guided Setup without the CableCARD. You'll be able to watch all of your analog cable channels (TiVo Premiere 500GB only), but you'll need to get the CableCARD to view any digital channels.

If your cable provider requires that they install the card, set up the TiVo box a day or two before your installation appointment. This will allow your TiVo DVR to connect to the TiVo Service and download any software updates that are available.

To help your cable technician with installing your CableCARD decoder, please download and print the following instructions:
TiVo DVR instructions for CableCARD installers (PDF)

My CableCARD just arrived and I've already complete Guided Setup. Now what do I do?

Once you have the card, simply insert it into the CableCARD slot on your TiVo box and the menus to configure the card will automatically display; there's no need to run Guided Setup again.

How do I activate my CableCARD?

You must call your cable company to activate your card. Your cable company may refer to the activation process as “pairing” the CableCARD or "binding" the CableCARD.

All of the information they'll need is located on the gray and black CableCARD MMI screen, which appears after you've inserted the CableCARD. This gray and black screen lists the phone number you'll need to call to activate the card. Typically they'll ask for the serial number (Card S/N), the Host ID, and sometimes the 'Data' identifier.

If you subscribe to multiple tiers of cable service, check a few channels in each tier before getting off the phone to ensure the correct cable packages have been enabled (HBO, for example).

The time required for your CableCARD to become active can vary depending on your cable provider, but it typically becomes activated within a few hours. After the card is successfully activated, you can begin watching your digital channels (analog for TP500). A full program guide for the upcoming weeks will be downloaded within 24 hours, or you can connect to the TiVo service in Messages & Settings and perform a manual update to download the latest programming information for your complete channel lineup.

What happens when I complete my commitment?

After the end of your TiVo service subscription commitment with a TiVo DVR, your monthly service plan will continue on a month-to-month basis and TiVo will charge you on a monthly basis at the then-applicable monthly service plan rate until you cancel. See terms & conditions for TiVo Payment Plans for details. Keeping your account and credit card information current will help you avoid any interruptions in service.

Do I own the TiVo DVR at the end of my service commitment or do I have to give it back?

After the 30-day money-back guarantee expires, you own the TiVo box. If you subscribed to the TiVo service on a monthly plan with a commitment and cancel before the end for you commitment period, you will be charged an early termination fee. See terms & conditions for TiVo payment plans for details.

What happens if my TiVo DVR breaks during my service commitment?

All TiVo DVRs are subject to the standard TiVo DVR warranty. Please see the TiVo DVR limited warranty for details. TiVo also offers two (2) year and three (3) year extended warranty plans which may be purchased within ninety (90) days from the earlier of the DVR purchase date or TiVo service activation date

How does the money back guarantee work?
  • TiVo offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. Only applies to initial activations if canceled within 30 days and the TiVo box or accessory is returned for a full refund. If you cancel within 30 days of activation (which is typically the date your order ships), you will receive a full refund if you return the TiVo box and accessory, if applicable, within 15 days of cancellation. The shipping charge for the return is at your expense. If you do not return the TiVo box and accessory, if applicable, within the first 30 days of activation, you will be charged a "Non-returned Equipment Fee" equal to the MSRP of the TiVo box and accessory, if applicable, and applicable taxes minus the upfront cost of the box and accessory, if applicable. If you change your subscription plan within the first 30 days of activation, you may be charged a fee equal to the MSRP of the TiVo box and accessory, if applicable, and applicable taxes minus the upfront cost of the box and accessory , if applicable, depending on the subscription plan you choose. Service plan renewals, and hardware replacements and upgrades are not eligible for the 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Returned DVRs must include all original components, literature, warranties and packaging in the same saleable condition in which it was received. Refunds for returns will cover product amount and any sales taxes charged. Refunds will not be made for any shipping and handling charges. Returns not meeting these requirements may be subject to a restocking fee equaling 15% of the retail value of the DVR (not including taxes). Damaged merchandise, cosmetically or otherwise, is subject to an increased restocking fee on a case-by-case basis. If an order has shipped, it is the purchaser's responsibility to accept the shipment and return the order per our Return Policy. Orders that are refused at the designated shipping address may incur a 15% restocking fee
What retail stores sell TiVo products?
  • Best Buy is a national retailer that sells TiVo Roamio in their core store,  TiVo Roamio Plus/Pro is available in Magnolia Home Theater departments only
  • Amazon.com and bestbuy.com are national online retailers that sell TiVo Roamio DVRs

  • In various regions of the U.S., TiVo Roamio may also be purchased from HHGregg, Fry's Electronics, Abt Electronics & Appliances, Crutchfield, J&R, and other leading consumer electronics retail locations
  • Find a store
Are you offering current TiVo subscribers a discount if they purchase a new box?

Yes. TiVo offers current customers a Multi-Service Discount ("MSD") of $2 on monthly service = $12.99 per month, or $100 on Product Lifetime service = $399.99. To be eligible, you must have an active current qualifying subscription to the TiVo service. See the Multi-Service Discount Agreement for more information. Log into tivo.com to see if you qualify.

A new UI look and feel has been introduced on TiVo Roamio. Will a TiVo Premiere have access to this new look? Can I download it to a previous TiVo box?

No, the new look and feel is only available on the TiVo Roamio platform and will not be downloadable to any previous TiVo DVRs. The UI looks slightly different but the functionality and menus are exactly the same.

Can I use the classic SD UI if I want?

No.  Classic SD UI is no longer available on TiVo Roamio and future platforms.  Users can still set their aspect ratio to 4:3 and/or their Video Output Format to 480i/p so the UI can be viewed on an SD TV, but instead of switching back to Classic UI, it will scale the UI down.

What can I personalize on the Discovery Bar?

Customers can indicate the types of things they'd like to see in the discovery bar. For instance, you'll be able to tell your DVR that you'd like to see more movies, and less TV shows in the bar, or more free content and less pay content.

How does the TiVo service choose what is on the Discovery Bar?

When searching or browsing, the discovery bar will populate content that is relevant to what the user is searching for. If a user is not searching or browsing, the bar recommends content popular with other TiVo subscribers, or chosen by the TiVo editorial team as a highlight for that week. The TiVo service tries to present the best matches for what you're looking for, allowing you to discover new and interesting things to watch.

What is the size of the hard drives for TiVo DVRs?
  • TiVo Roamio is 500 gigabytes
  • TiVo Roamio Plus is 1 terabyte
  • TiVo Roamio Pro is 3 terabytes
You say I have access to web videos and content, but why can't I search the Internet on my TiVo DVR?

We at TiVo want to bring customers the very best entertainment experience, and part of that is delivering entertainment content available from the Internet straight to the TV. That's why we focus solely on providing video on demand and other entertainment content on TiVo boxes that are especially engineered for your TV.

What do the Roamio front-panel display lights (circles) represent?
  • The green light tells you the power is on
  • The yellow light indicates remote activity; you will see it blink every time you press a remote key
  • The blue light indicates a program is being downloaded onto the box. This could come from a broadband source, such as Amazon Instant Video, or from another TiVo DVR on your home network that is transferring a program
  • The red lights correspond to the four or six tuners on your TiVo Roamio DVR; if one tuner is recording a program the red circle will be on. The additional curved red lights to the right of the circle (some say this looks like a caterpillar) will light up as each additional tuner is activated showing that between 1 – 4 or 6 tuners are currently recording different programs simultaneously.
Can you add an expandable drive to TiVo DVRs?

Yes. You can connect an external hard drive via eSATA. The 1 terabyte My Book AV DVR Expander from Western Digital can be purchased on tivo.com.

Why did you choose an eSATA port for the TiVo DVRs instead of a USB port for external hard drives?

An eSATA port offers a more robust connection for the external hard drive than a USB port. Because the external hard drive is typically always connected to the TiVo DVR, this connection is important and best supported with an eSATA port.

Does the TiVo Roamio have an HDMI port?
  • All TiVo Roamio DVRs provide an HDMI output
  • HDMI cables are NOT included with the purchase of any TiVo Premiere DVRs
  • TiVo Roamio Plus/Pro support up to 16 simultaneous HDMI connections when connected to a compatible HDMI switch
What do I need to stream or download shows to mobile devices?

The free TiVo App for iOS devices is required for all DVRs. Compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. (No functionality for Android devices is available at this time.)

TiVo Roamio Plus and Pro have all streaming functionality built in, no additional hardware or is required.

Purchase of the TiVo Stream accessory (sold separately) is required to for the 4-tuner TiVo Roamio or any TiVo Premiere DVR, but all the functionality is exactly the same.

Can I watch or download shows on a mobile device from the 4-tuner TiVo Roamio?

Yes, you will need to add the TiVo Stream accessory (sold separately) to the 4-tuner TiVo Roamio. (There is built-in streaming functionality in TiVo Roamio Plus and Pro.)

You will also need the TiVo App for iOS devices. (Streaming capability is only available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch at this time, no Android devices are supported)

How does the built-in streaming for TiVo Roamio Plus and Pro work?

Essentially the TiVo Stream accessory is built right in to both the TiVo Roamio Plus and Pro and seamlessly delivers content stored on the DVR to mobile iOS devices such as the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. It allows for simultaneous streaming of recorded content to as many as four devices around the home. It allows users to download their programs at home to the mobile device for watching out of the home. And coming soon, you’ll be able to stream and download to the device while out of the home via a WiFi or in some cases a cellular network.

The free TiVo App for iOS devices is required.

What devices can I stream recorded TiVo content to?

With built-in streaming, users will be able to access content on their home DVR via iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch with iOS version 5.1 or later.  You must download the free TiVo App for iOS devices.

When I’m using TiVo Stream or the built-in streaming on Roamio Plus/Pro, what can I do at home or away?
AT HOME AWAY
Watch live TV YES YES
Watch recordings from my TiVo DVR YES YES
Download recordings onto my iOS device YES YES
Watch recordings already downloaded to my iOS device YES YES

Due to the copy protection assigned by the content provider, not all content can be downloaded to your mobile device for offline viewing, and not all content can be streamed when you are away from your local network.

Can I watch a show on my mobile device while I am recording it?

Yes, you can watch a show on a mobile device as it is recording. Using the Record and Watch button on the TiVo app is the easiest way to start watching immediately; it automatically starts a recording and immediately plays it back on your mobile device in one-step.
For 4-tuner TiVo Roamio: TiVo Stream accessory required and sold separately

Can I watch Live TV on my mobile device in the home while watching another program on the TV?

Yes, you can watch close to Live TV by streaming a show that is currently recording. Use the Record and Watch button on the app; it automatically starts a recording and immediately plays it back on your mobile device in one-step. For 4-tuner TiVo Roamio: TiVo Stream accessory required and sold separately

How many shows can I stream?

You can stream up to four shows simultaneously to four mobile devices in your home. Please note that to support two to four streams, you may need more than one DVR. Being able to stream four shows simultaneously also depends on the bitrate of the source recordings. For example, you may have difficulties streaming four high bitrate HD programs at the same time. For 4-tuner TiVo Roamio: TiVo Stream accessory required and sold separately

Can I download my TiVo recordings on my iPad/iphone to watch outside the home?

Yes,  you can download recordings to your iOS device in the home so that you can take them with you. For 4-tuner TiVo Roamio: TiVo Stream accessory required and sold separately

Can I download any show or content to a mobile device or will some be copyright protected?

You can stream any TiVo recording within the home, including regular and some premium content. Due to FCC copyright regulations, some premium content may be marked as “copy once” and therefore cannot be downloaded to the mobile device. Those shows will be marked with a red slash icon.

Are there parental controls similar to TiVo’s TV interface for streaming content?

No. Currently, the TiVo Stream or built-in streaming does not recognize the TiVo DVRs parental controls. Therefore, it is possible for a minor to stream a show from a TiVo DVR that was restricted by parental controls. It is up to adults to monitor a child’s viewing of TiVo recordings on iOS devices just as they would for any Internet video content. We recommend putting a password on the iOS device itself.

Can I watch live TV on my mobile device while out of my home?

Yes, you can stream to one iOS device out of the home while others are watching TV or streaming to other devices within the home simultaneously. Use the Watch button on the app; it automatically starts a recording and immediately plays it on your mobile device in one step.

This functionality can be used on any WiFi or MiFi network. Quality may be degraded based on the bandwidth of that connection. You cannot stream shows on a cellular network, but you can download shows over a 4G/LTE network connection (but remember that it will use up your data plan).

Due to the copy protection assigned by the content provider, not all content can be downloaded to your mobile device for offline viewing, and not all content can be streamed when you are away from your local network.

Can I download shows to my mobile device while out of my home?

Yes, you can download to one iOS device out of the home even while others are watching TV or streaming to other devices within the home simultaneously. Use the download button on the app; it automatically starts to download the show directly onto your iPad or iPhone. Due to the copy protection assigned by the content provider, not all content can be downloaded to your mobile device for offline viewing. For 4-tuner TiVo Roamio: TiVo Stream accessory required and sold separately.

This functionality can be used on any WiFi network. Quality may be degraded based on the bandwidth of that WiFi connection. You can also download shows on any 3G or 4G/LTE cellular network. Based on the speed of connection, you may be able to begin watching while the show is downloading. Carrier data limits or additional fees may apply.

Multi-Room Streaming:

Multi-Room Streaming (MRS) means that you can watch recorded shows instantly on another networked TiVo DVR or TiVo Mini in your home. Access your My Shows list on your DVR in the bedroom, click “Play” and start watching shows on your DVR in the living room. No waiting for downloads or transfers!

The best way to enjoy Multi-Room Streaming is by using a wired Ethernet or Coax/MoCA) connection. Using a Wireless N or G adapter for Multi-Room Streaming is not supported.

Does multi-room viewing & streaming work with TiVo Roamio and other TiVo platforms?
  • Multi-room viewing of HD content* is possible between TiVo Roamio, Roamio Plus/Pro, TiVo Premiere, Premiere 4, and Premiere XL4, Series3, TiVo HD, or XL and TiVo Mini.
  • Multi-Room Streaming, only works between two or more networked TiVo Roamio, Premiere DVRs and TiVo Mini.

* Not all programs may be transferred using the multi-room viewing or feature due to the use of copy protection mechanisms assigned by the program provider and permitted under the FCC's encoding rules. These shows usually are marked with a red circle-slash icon. (47 C.F.R. 76.1904)

For setup or troubleshooting help:
What are the significant differences between the in-home and out-of-home streaming capabilities and experience?

In-home streaming allows for up to 4 simultaneous streams, and out-of-home streaming only supports streaming to one of your mobile devices at a time. In addition, due to the copy protection assigned by the content provider, not all content can be streamed when you are away from your local network.

Does an out-of-home (OOH) stream affect an in home stream or vice versa?

Yes, streaming to more than one device at a time may cause your out-of-home stream to drop to lower quality levels. This occurs because the responsiveness of the stream decreases with the additional load.
